The Sisters of Book Row
by Shelley Noble

book cover

This novel is based on an interesting piece of New York City history that I knew nothing about. It's 1915 and citizens of NYC are under constant threat of arrest due to the Comstock Act. It might not be every citizen in danger, but one never knows when those that uphold the law will deem that you are in violation. Of course, I had to do a deeper dive and discovered this is a zombie law -- still on the books, but not acted upon. In the state of our country now, I wonder if someone will decide to take it off the inactive list and decide to enforce it. Have I peaked your curiosity and are you now going to look up what the Comstock Act is?

The Associate

This was my first book by Grisham, and at first I did not like it. It seemed like it was going to be a sad, dark story. But THEN it got going and you start to see how this new young lawyer who was being blackmailed is really going to turn the tables and have the upper hand. A really good read with an ending that will leave you thinking.

Happy Place

I have come to really enjoy Henry’s books when I need a lighter read that still has some real substance. This was truly a good book about two people who love each other but can’t get out of their own way to be together. My only problem was that, as a non-linear novel, both the current events and past events both contained dialogue, which, since I did it as an audio book, I felt made it harder to keep track of the time frame than if only the current time has the dialogue.

I enjoyed this VERY THOROUGH history of digital innovation, from Ada Lovelace to Steve Jobs. But, just so everyone knows...uh...it's a lot. :-)

A good read for any fan of the anime. It’s nice to relive the story in its original form.

The Plot

There is just something about this book I did not like. I’m not sure if it was the writing, which was flat and took way too many words to explain things, or if it was simply the plot, no pun intended. It’s about a writer who takes someone’s idea for a story. But I found the events predictable and frankly was glad when the book was done.

Kept my attention the entire book.

Circe

I loved this book! The story touches on or at least mentions many of the gods and other recognizable figures from Greek mythology and really helped me understand how they connected. The story begins with Circe’s birth and life in the city with her family but then spends much time and attention on the island of Aeaea where she comes to terms with some old demons and charts the course for her future. If you like mythology, you will love this story.
