I enjoyed this VERY THOROUGH history of digital innovation, from Ada Lovelace to Steve Jobs. But, just so everyone knows...uh...it's a lot. :-)

This novel is Ha Jin's fictional and historical memoir of a Chinese Officer taken prisoner by the Koreans in the Korean War. His message is loud and clear: The most valuable thing for a man is his life, lived only once-and he hould live it so that when he recalls the past, he will not regret having wasted any time or feel ashamed of having accomplished nothing, having devoted his eneergy to the liberation of mankind, the freedom to be me, to live.

The Plot

There is just something about this book I did not like. I’m not sure if it was the writing, which was flat and took way too many words to explain things, or if it was simply the plot, no pun intended. It’s about a writer who takes someone’s idea for a story. But I found the events predictable and frankly was glad when the book was done.

A good read for any fan of the anime. It’s nice to relive the story in its original form.

Coraline

I recently discovered this author and he has quickly become one of my favorites. This story is creepy and disturbing, but what makes it even more interesting is that the central character, Coraline NOT CAROLINE, is a young girl which allows her to behave in more interesting ways than an adult would. And don’t worry. All of your “But what about…” questions are answered in the end.

Animal Farm

While I probably read this as a child, I am glad that I read it now as an adult as I am sure I can appreciate more of the aspects of the story now. I enjoyed how each group of animals had a dominant trait that allowed the story to progress. My favorite part was how the rules that were painted on the barn wall would gradually change to favor those who were in charge. A good but frightening tale.

My Side of the Mountain

The author and her friends ran away as children, just for a few hours. When she grew up and wondered what it would be really like to truly run away, she wrote this book! In it, a boy from NYC sets off to live in the mountains, with his parents' blessings. He learns to live off the land, hunt, carve out a house, and befriend the animals, plants, and trees. When some hikers come along, he helps them learn living in harmony wih all living things--and to be responsibly free. Returning to society, he uses what he's learned to live with people again in his new found ways of "balance."
