Joyland
by Stephen King

View in Library Catalog

While more of a who-done-it than a supernatural thriller, this story does embody both. I think King’s gift is being able to tell a story about everyday people and everyday events so wonderfully that when you get to the weird stuff, it just seems to make sense. But most of this story is about a college boy on spring break after the love of his life breaks up with him, and how a small-time amusement park saves him while he helps save the park. Excellent read!

A Dangerous Man

This is a new author for me and I was very please with the book. Joe Pike, the central character of this story is at once an enigma and someone who would you would trust immediately. The story of Joe’s Background is dribbled out slowly amidst the action and danger of this book. The story involves a young female bank teller who is being kidnapped when Joe intervenes. She has no money and can’t imagine why someone would want to take her. But the reasons for this only become apparent at the end after several more encounters with thugs, and the reason is something that will shock her and change her life forever. I look forward to reading more by this author.

The Wall Of Storms

This was an excellent sequel [to Grace of Kings]. I love how they expanded upon the plot and characters from the first book. This really felt like the building of a dynasty with a dynamic and ever shifting plot.

The Bluest Eye
by Toni Morrison

This author has an amazing gift of being able to tell one of the saddest stories but with such tenderness and understanding. It’s a story about being a black child in the south and also a story of being a black woman who is from the south. You will find it difficult to really like any of the characters, but you will feel for almost all of them, and this is Morrison’s gift. The title comes from the little black girl’s desire to have blue eyes, like those of the dolls she sees. If only she had blue eyes, everything else would be good for her. And the sadness of this desire is only one of the emotions Morrison will have you feeling.

The Only One Left

5 The Only One Left by Riley Sager Home health aid Kit is hired to take care of Lenora after the previous aid disappeared from the house with no warning. Lenora was accused of killing her parents and sister years ago but never was convicted. Kit was also accused of killing a patient who just happened to be her mother. I totally enjoyed this twisty novel.

The Odyssey

What I enjoyed about this book was the formality and respectfulness of the language. Even when they are very angry and threatening death, they are still respectful of their language and of their foe. The general dialogue conveys a deep respect for neighbors as well as travelers and strangers and to mankind in general. I also appreciate the dedication and loyalty the people of this time had to those they respected and those that had taken care of them. All of this was a welcome contrast to the harshness of the time and life in general, even without the cyclops and the vengeful gods.

Terrible Virtue

This book is about the life of Margaret Sanger. My problem with the book is not the writing, but it is with the depiction of this formidable, abrasive woman. This is a problem I have with historical fiction. Was this what the character was really like or has the personality been embellished to spice up the novel. For me the descriptions of her dalliances really turned me off but her fight for women's reproductive rights was admirable.

A quick easy read. i read the book in one afternoon. It basically told the story of her 10 at Gourmet magazine ( which i had to subscribed to many years ago before it stopped publishing).
